Understanding Headline Rewriting Headline writing is a major skill of journalism that requires you to encapsulate the essence of news into a crisp, accurate and interesting way. A headline is, for most readers, the first thing they will read, and it can often play a similarly important role in determining how a news story is interpreted. Writing headlines gives journalists a first pass at balancing and clarity of stories, not to mention a lack of bias. A strong rewritten headline should reflect the heart of a story without sensationalism or misleading words. It has to be true, but it doesn’t have to be boring! Headline rewriting helps journalism students learn news values, tone and ethical responsibilities. It also gets writers into the habit of turning information heavy on substance and light on words, into tight, pithy headlines. This would be a particular challenge for some candidates, but it is fair to all by learning how to summarise complex articles so they express the stor...
Culture feature Street Food Culture Continues to Thrive in Bengaluru The city of Bengaluru is now seeing a rise in the number of art cafes and cultural hubs that are redefining social and artistic spaces. There are coffee shops like these all over Indiranagar & Whitefield and Koramangala that are not just selling coffee, but also providing space for local artists, musicians & writers to display their creativity. They host live music nights, poetry nights, art exhibitions and workshops- all provided with a glass of locally made drink. Residents have said such spaces build a sense of community and make culture more accessible, particularly among young creatives who can struggle to secure outlets for their work. Local artists were thrilled to see attention turn to Bengaluru’s burgeoning creative scene, noting that these cafés provide a direct link between the public and creators without the formality of galleries or concert halls. Weekend sessions for children are also offer...
Reflections on CIA 1 and 2  CIA - 1  Topic:- Stray Dog Issues in Kannur Raise Safety Concerns for Residents and Students Reflection For my CIA 1 project, I took on a problem that hits close to home for people living in Kannur. It’s something that messes with everyone’s day-to-day life—especially students and anyone who has to commute. Once I actually started talking to people and digging into the issue, it really struck me how often things like safety just slip through the cracks unless someone takes the time to write them down, ask questions, and pay attention. I picked up a lot of reporting skills by just being out there—watching what was happening, figuring out who really shapes the community, and listening to different sides of the story. When I sat down to write my blog, I realized how important it is to tell these stories honestly, without blowing things out of proportion. Working on CIA 1 gave me a real boost. I feel more confident now, and I know I can spot and r...
Crime Beat A shocking crime in  Bengaluru  has left neighbourhoods in Nelamangala reeling after a 68‑year‑old woman was brutally murdered and robbed inside her home while her husband lay bedridden beside her    ( https://www.newindianexpress.com/cities/bengaluru/2026/Feb/20/woman-robbed-killed-in-front-of-bedridden-husband-in-bengaluru ) Woman robbed, killed in front of bedridden husband in Bengaluru The crime came to light around 6.30 pm when a physiotherapist arrived for the husband’s session and found him lying beside his wife’s body. Police claim that the incident took place at the residence of a couple located on Pete Beedhi Street. The alleged perpetrator, who has been identified as a 35-year-old male (a neighbour and a wholesale shop owner), is said to have tricked the woman into letting him into her home by falsely requesting water; once he gained access to the home, he is said to have cut the woman's throat and stolen the gold bangles she was wearing. ...
Letter to Editors What is a Letter to the Editor? A Letter to the Editor is a way for readers to write to a newspaper or other media source sharing their opinions, feelings, and suggestions regarding matters of public interest. By writing these types of letters, citizens have an opportunity to express themselves directly to the media, as well as call attention to situations or issues involving social, political, and civic matters in daily life. Letters to the editor are an essential aspect of any democratic society. They provide a venue for public dialogue and show various points of view on topical issues. For students studying journalism, writing letters to the editor assists with developing clear, accountable expression of ideas while also providing the opportunity to learn how to use the media to create awareness and promote accountability. The format teaches writers to present their ideas in a clear, fact-based manner that is written with respect for the seriousness of the sub...
Column - City & Society  Urban Safety: More than Headlines Most of the time, discussing how to be safe happens after a newsworthy crime has occurred. However, women, transit riders, and other individuals have a constant need to think about safety from their homes to their workplaces, schools, and the areas surrounding them. Although cities promise prosperity and freedom, many public spaces across cities do not offer either to the populations who live in them or to people who utilise public transportation there. The absence of well-lit and populated streets, as well as the lack of supportive individuals through visible social services, are the foundation of how people are forced to lead their day-to-day lives cautiously rather than confidently in public spaces. The ongoing requirement to always be alert becomes a new normal; nevertheless, it was never intended. In addition to legislation and policy, social consciousness, collective responsibility, and awareness contribute to inc...
Understanding Crime Reporting Reporting on crime presents one of the toughest and most challenging jobs in journalism. As a student who is learning reporting fundamentals, I have learned that most crime stories are created from not only hearsay or visual dramatics, but also according to public documents, confidential reports, and constant follow up with all sources involved in a given crime story. This blog aims to give you an overview of what I learned about the types of tools available to journalists working in crime reporting, as well as how stories can be developed responsibly over time. Documents and Reports Used in Crime Reporting In reviewing crime coverage from various media outlets, I discovered that journalists rely on both public and private documentation to verify and corroborate the information contained in their stories. Some examples of the types of documents that are used to support crime reporting include: A First Information Report (F.I.R.) is typically the first docu...
News Analysis As a media student, I’ve realised that news is not just about what happens, but about how it is presented. News analysis is important for gaining insight into the decisions made by journalists and media outlets in the reporting of an event beyond just headlines and breaking news. This blog is centred on analysing how news is framed and how that framing affects the way the audience understands the news.   The News Story I Have Been Following The news story I chose to follow is the most recent media coverage of a social issue that is currently in the headlines across many, if not all, news organisations. All organisations covered the same core facts but there was a wide variation in the tone, emphasis, and selection of images used by the various media organisations. This leads me to wonder if news can ever be completely objective or if framing of the news story is more significant in how people interpret the news than we realise. How the...
City Beat  Ongoing Road Construction Troubles Residents of Kothanur–Hennur The ongoing roadworks along the Kothanur-Hennur stretch of Bengaluru roads continue to impact the daily travel of residents and motorists, and there is still confusion about how long this project will take to complete. Roadwork is still ongoing within many of the key road segments adjacent to Kothanur and Hennur, including areas that remain cut up, continue to be damaged from digging, and are poorly managed. Even though roadwork has been underway for several months in these areas, residents continue to report that there are still no developed road surfaces along these segments of the community. The constant digging up and placement of loose gravel at various locations, along with an uneven surface, make the travel to destinations much more challenging, especially during periods of high-volume traffic. The amount of time it takes to travel short distances can become significant, particularly where major inter...
News Sources What They Are and Why They Matter ! As I continue studying journalism and media practices, one concept is becoming increasingly evident to me: news cannot happen without sources. All the reports, headlines, and live stories you see come from information found in sources at times, places, and people. My knowledge of news sources and their importance has enabled me to be a better reader of news, and a more conscientious student journalist. What News Sources Are to Me News sources are the individuals, documents, institutions, and materials from which journalists obtain information. They can be appointed government officials, subject matter experts, eyewitnesses, reports (i.e., police reports), official press releases, interviews, public records, and anyone else potentially impacted by an issue. While I read news as an educated consumer, I’ve also discovered that the credibility of any given story is often linked to the person quoted or recorded in the story as well as w...
News Angle vs News Peg Being a journalism and media student has aided me in understanding that the reporting of news is more than simply telling what has happened; it encompasses both how and the reason for the telling of any given event. The two concepts that have assisted me with the understanding of this aspect of journalism are the news peg and the news angle. These two concepts may seem to be somewhat similar, but they actually have two very different functions in the making of a news story . What I Understand by a News Peg A news peg is what makes a story newsworthy at a particular moment. It answers the question  why is this story being reported now? Most news stories tend to have a recent event associated with them — such as a government announcement; a court verdict; an event, such as a protest; the release of a report; or the remembrance of an anniversary. The event serves as a “peg” to provide an explanation for why the story has a place in the news cycle. Without...
My Favourite Reportage  Analysing "Arfa Khanum Sherwani’s "Ground Reporting Journalism gains weight only when it raises the volume of voices that are drowned out or misrepresented. One of the few notable Indian journalists focusing on marginalised populations, identity issues and social justice is Arfa Khanum Sherwani. My affinity for her reporting stems from the combination of her factual clarity and her sensitivity to humanity, which is never sensationalised.   Why This Reportage Stands Out The basis of Arfa Khanum Sherwani's reports originates from the lived experiences of people on the ground. Her reports teller quality of experience by allowing those being reported on to tell their own stories. She does this instead of relying on sound bites from the studio or the debates and noise generated by the political establishment. Arfa Khanum Sherwani's impact comes from her commitment not to oversimplify complex issues into black-and-white (for example, two people figh...
Understanding Media Influence: Persuasion vs Propaganda and Journalism vs Activism vs advocacy  The media plays a powerful role in shaping opinions and attitudes. However, how the  media influences audiences is not always the same. Understanding the differences between persuasion and propaganda , and between journalism, advocacy, and activism , helps readers critically engage with media content and recognise intent behind messages. Persuasion vs Propaganda Persuasion refers to a way of communicating, attempting to change someone's opinion or action while providing them the ability to think independently, ask questions about the issue, and make a decision for themselves. To be effectively persuasive requires using facts ethically and openly and transparently, and presenting both sides of an issue in a relatively equal and fair manner. The ability to critically evaluate your audience is an equally important part of successful persuasive communication. Propaganda, however, is mea...
Journalism in India How It Has Changed and Why It Matters in CP ( communication media, psychology) In recent years, Indian journalism has witnessed radical change. Historically, journalism functioned as a vehicle for independence; whereas today, journalism is one of the most important influencing factors in the digital economy and has always adapted to changing social requirements, political requirements and technological advances. The historical growth patterns of journalism help us understand democracy; therefore, journalism is a key element of the CP program. Journalism's Early Years As a war against the British, journalism was originally used as an instrument of war to resist colonisation rather than an instrument to communicate information. Many of India's most famous leaders wrote newspapers in order to bring their ideas to the masses, including Mahatma Gandhi, who used his media capability to promote involvement in the fight against colonial rule. Journalism served to p...
What Journalism Means to Me "The smaller the Journalists are the better off society is" - Warren Buffett  At first, it might seem odd to say this, but it gets across an important point: journalism is more effective when it is even-handed, accountable to the public, and committed to serving the public good rather than pursuing power or status. To me, being a journalist isn't about being seen and heard — it's about being honest, ethical and responsible.  Understanding of Journalism Journalism is described as gathering, editing, and producing news, information, and features about events that will be communicated publicly through various forms of distribution such as newspapers, television, or online publications, in order to provide people with timely, accurate information with which to make informed decisions regarding their lives and the world around them. Journalism also acts as a public service and a conduit for democracy. To me, journalism is a public service . It a...
