My Favourite Reportage

Analysing "Arfa Khanum Sherwani’s "Ground Reporting

Journalism gains weight only when it raises the volume of voices that are drowned out or misrepresented. One of the few notable Indian journalists focusing on marginalised populations, identity issues and social justice is Arfa Khanum Sherwani. My affinity for her reporting stems from the combination of her factual clarity and her sensitivity to humanity, which is never sensationalised.

Why This Reportage Stands Out

The basis of Arfa Khanum Sherwani's reports originates from the lived experiences of people on the ground. Her reports teller quality of experience by allowing those being reported on to tell their own stories. She does this instead of relying on sound bites from the studio or the debates and noise generated by the political establishment.
Arfa Khanum Sherwani's impact comes from her commitment not to oversimplify complex issues into black-and-white (for example, two people fighting). Instead, she places those complex events (communal riots) in a historical context, a policy context and a social context.

Style and Narrative Technique

Her direct, calm and evidence-based reporting style does not exploit emotions through the use of video to reinforce the message; rather, her videos support the message. She works to build an emotional bond with her subject without compromising journalistic integrity through the use of empathy when conducting interviews and allowing for emotional expression.
From a psychological point of view, by using this approach, she is providing opportunities for individuals to empathise with others and think about how to approach sensitive issues without creating outrage.
The way that she reports is very direct and evidence-based, while also staying calm. She uses visuals to help tell a story, but not take over from the story. When she does interviews, she treats the people she is interviewing with sympathy, allowing them to express their feelings without taking advantage of them in an exploitative manner. This method creates an emotional bond between the relationship between those who have experienced an event and others who hear about the same events in an informative manner.
This approach generates empathy and reflection over outrage, and allows those who view the reportage to engage in a much more thoughtful manner with these types of sensitive issues than what may have occurred previously.

Reporting over Propaganda

Though she questions the dominant narrative that develops from power structures, her reporting remains true to the practice of journalism. She verifies the facts, provides context for voices and makes it easy to determine what is opinion versus reporting. Her work may contain critical assessments of actions taken by others, but does not seek to manipulate or mobilise the audience, clearly delineating the line between journalism and activism.
The importance of separating between activism and journalism has become increasingly apparent in the current media environment, where reporting that is critical of power or dominant narratives has been referred to as propaganda or advocacy.

Reflection as a CP Student

As a student in Communication, Media and Psychology, this has served to enhance my understanding of how representation, framing and narrative voice can impact a viewer's perception of similar situations. More importantly, this demonstrates how much responsibility lies with individual journalists in reporting on vulnerable communities and sensitive socio-political issues.
Her work demonstrates how journalism can be compassionate and critical while not losing objectivity.

Conclusion

Arfa Khanum Sherwani's piece of journalism is my favourite because it represents journalism that listens, watches and behaves responsibly by questioning how journalism works. This assignment did not use force or theater to accomplish this end; it was accomplished through clarity, context and an ethical commitment to each other as humans. In terms of using this report as a future learning tool to understand how media can contribute to the advancement of society through respect for the dignity of individuals, this report has a considerable level of importance for me.
