News Angle vs News Peg
Being a journalism and media student has aided me in understanding that the reporting of news is more than simply telling what has happened; it encompasses both how and the reason for the telling of any given event. The two concepts that have assisted me with the understanding of this aspect of journalism are the news peg and the news angle. These two concepts may seem to be somewhat similar, but they actually have two very different functions in the making of a news story.
What I Understand by a News Peg
A news peg is what makes a story newsworthy at a particular moment. It answers the question why is this story being reported now?
Most news stories tend to have a recent event associated with them — such as a government announcement; a court verdict; an event, such as a protest; the release of a report; or the remembrance of an anniversary. The event serves as a “peg” to provide an explanation for why the story has a place in the news cycle.
Without an event acting as the “peg,” an important issue may not be considered to be “news” at that particular point in time.
What I Understand by a News Angle
A news angle is the perspective from which a journalist chooses to tell a story. It decides what aspect of the event is highlighted and how the story is framed.
When I've read about the same historical event in different sources, I have found that the same story is reported differently. One source may focus on the political ramifications, while another may be focused on the economic impact, and yet another on the personal & emotional aspects of the event. This is attributable to the source's angle in reporting said event. When approaching the reporting of any event, reporters will ask themselves what is the most important piece of information that represents the event. They will report the information in the context of this information, and that is known as the angle.
Difference Between News Peg and News Angle
From my understanding:
-
A news peg gives a story timeliness
-
A news angle gives a story focus
-
A news peg is event-based
-
A news angle is perspective-based
-
A news peg explains why now
-
A news angle explains how the story is told
One news peg can support multiple news angles depending on the journalist and the audience.
The distinction between news peg and news angle has been valuable in helping me to be a more critical reader of news and to write with greater clarity. It has helped me to see that news is not just a collection of facts, but that it is also a product of editing and framing decisions.
As a student reporter, an understanding of these two elements helps me to create the structure of my stories, and to be more aware of how the decisions I make in reporting affect how the audience will perceive the news.
